History
The church was built around 1566 on land donated by the gaunkars of Cortalim to the Jesuit college of St Paul. It was dedicated to the Apostles St Philip and St James and opened for public worship on 1 May 1566.
A chapel near the church marks the place where the first Jesuits entered Salcete and celebrated a Mass on 1 May 1560. This makes the site one of the earliest places connected with the Christian expansion in the region.
According to parish tradition, the present church stands on or near the site of an earlier Hindu temple. Over time, the church became a major centre of faith and evangelization in Salcete and later served as the main parish church for the locality.
