St Peter Church in São Pedro, near Old Goa, is one of the oldest parish churches in the area and an important reminder of Goa’s early Portuguese Christian history. Also known as San Pedro Church or St. Peter’s Church, it serves the small communities of Bainguinim and Panelim.

History
The church was established in 1543 by Portuguese architects on the border of Old Goa. It was built to serve the spiritual needs of the villages of Bainguinim and Panelim, and its cost was paid from the public treasury.
At first, the church had simple mud walls and a roof of coconut branches. Over time, it was replaced by the laterite structure visible today, with later plastering and restoration work.
It is one of the eight parish churches of the old city of Goa and remains the only surviving parish church from that group in its original area.
Parish life
The parish has around 300 Catholics today, though historical records show that it once had a much larger population. Plague and migration caused a gradual decline over the centuries.
Even with a small present-day flock, the church remains spiritually significant to the local community. It continues to be used for Mass, feast day celebrations, and parish remembrance.
The parish also stands as a historical witness to the early life of Catholic Goa.
Feast and devotion
The feast of St Peter is celebrated on 29 June, the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, or on the nearest Sunday after it. It is the principal feast of the parish and the main annual celebration.
Devotion to St Peter, the prince of the Apostles, is central to the parish identity. The feast connects the village to the wider apostolic tradition of the Church.
Note: The church once had a much larger Catholic population, with records showing around 2,000 Catholics in 1720 before numbers fell sharply in later centuries.
Church building
The church is a modest but elegant example of early Goan church architecture. It has a Renaissance and Mannerist character, with a simple façade, tiled porch, and a bell tower on the left side.
The interior includes five altars, with the main altar dedicated to St Peter. The building’s quiet appearance matches its position at the edge of historic Old Goa.
It was declared a national monument in the 1930s, which helped preserve it as a historic site.
