St Michael the Archangel Church in Orlim is one of the oldest Jesuit churches in Salcete and a major historic parish in South Goa. Set near the Sal River, it is locally known as the Orlim Church and has a long story of missionary beginnings, destruction, rebuilding, and renewal.

History
According to tradition, Jesuit missionaries brought the Gospel to Orlim around 1560. The first church was built on 8 May 1568 on land given by local converts, with financial support from the gaunkars.
The original building had mud walls and a thatched roof. It was blessed by Archbishop Dom Jorge Temudo and became one of the early Jesuit churches in Salcete. The first Mass in the church was followed by many baptisms.
The church was burned during periods of conflict, including attacks in 1571, 1579, and 1582. It was later rebuilt in 1590 in a more durable form using laterite stone and lime plaster. Further changes over the centuries gave it the form seen today.
The parish was handed over to the Dominican Fathers in 2017, marking the latest chapter in its long ecclesial history.
