History
The church was founded in 1603, making it one of the oldest churches still standing in Goa. According to parish history, the first structure was built with support from the Communidade of Anjuna and Assagao, under the Franciscan custodian Frei Miguel de Sao Boaventura.
The original church was later enlarged in 1613, and then pulled down and rebuilt again in 1713 to create a stronger structure. Further extensions were made after that, and the church continued to evolve through the 19th and 20th centuries.
Over the years the church received several improvements, including work done in 1888, repairs to the cemetery in 1950, and new flooring in 1993. The church was later handed over to the Pilar Society in 1996.

The parish is large and active, serving the Catholics of Anjuna and the surrounding area. It is also historically linked with the Franciscan mission tradition that shaped much of Goa’s early parish life.
