St Lawrence Church in Agaçaim is one of the most important parish churches in Tiswadi and a landmark on the banks of the Zuari. Also known as Sao Lourenco Church or St Lawrence the Martyr Church, it combines Jesuit origins, river history, and a strong parish tradition.

History
The original church was built by the Jesuits in 1565 on a fortified hill overlooking the Zuari estuary. Earlier still, there had been a small chapel in Agaçaim in 1541, traces of which can still be associated with the present site.
The church was enlarged during the period of diocesan priest Fr Estevão da Gama and later underwent several changes. It remained a key parish site on the old road and river crossing between Tiswadi and Salcete.
For centuries, the church dominated an important transport and trade route where boats carried people and goods across the river before the bridges were built.
Parish life
The parish has around 5,500 Catholics and remains active in worship, education, and local devotion. St Lawrence High School is one of the parish’s best-known institutions.
The parish also plays an important role in village identity, with church celebrations bringing together the wider community. The church is both a spiritual centre and a historical marker for Agaçaim.

Feast and devotion
The feast of St Lawrence the Martyr is celebrated on 10 August every year. It is the principal feast of the parish and the main annual celebration in Agaçaim.
St Lawrence is honored as the patron saint of sailors, and the parish’s old connection to the Zuari crossing gives this devotion extra meaning. On feast day, a unique coconut-breaking contest is also held, which is one of the parish’s best-loved traditions.
Note: The blessing of the river entrance during the feast reflects the old maritime importance of Agaçaim.
Church building
The church is a single-naved structure with a vaulted chancel and a high choir supported by Tuscan columns. Its façade has a three-arched galilee added in recent years, and a sharp gable with a round oculus.
One tower stands slightly back from the main façade, and a chapel of the Blessed Sacrament opens on the southern side. The interior is carefully decorated with carved mouldings and altars dedicated to St Lawrence, St Joseph, Our Lady of Succour, St Anthony, St Sebastian, St Francis Xavier, and St John the Baptist.
The church stands on a hill and looks out over the river, making it one of the most scenic parish churches in Goa.
