St Joseph Church in Shiroda is a historic parish church in Ponda taluka with roots that go back to the late 18th century. Known locally as the Shiroda Church, it remains an important centre of parish life, education, and devotion.
Basic profile
- Location: Karai, Shiroda, Goa 403103.
- Dedication: St Joseph.
- Portuguese name: Sao Jose Igreja em Shiroda, Goa.
- Popular name: The Shiroda Church.

History
The church is of ancient origin and was administered by the Jesuits. It was rebuilt in 1782, then repaired again and rebuilt before being blessed in 1890.
In 1894, the Archbishop of Goa created the Mission of Shiroda and entrusted it to the Missionary Society of Pilar. That mission covered territory from Shiroda to Collem and included chapels at Panchwadi, Molem, Dabal, and Sanvordem.
Today the parish is entrusted to diocesan clergy, showing how the church has moved through different pastoral phases while keeping its core identity intact.
Parish life
The parish has around 6,600 Catholics and remains a strong local centre of worship and education. Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate are based at Vimala Niketa, Karai, Shiroda, and St Joseph High School is one of the parish’s most important institutions.
The parish has a lively youth presence, active pastoral programs, and a strong connection to local families. It is also known for holding one of Goa’s large Eucharistic crosses.
Because the church stands at Karai, it serves as both a village landmark and a regional parish centre.
Feast and devotion
The feast of St Joseph is celebrated on 1 May every year. It is the principal feast of the parish and the main annual event in the church calendar.
St Joseph’s feast brings together prayer, procession, music, and parish celebration. It is one of the major devotional occasions in Shiroda.
Note: Some sources mention the first Sunday of May for the feast, but the parish information commonly records 1 May.
Church building
The present church reflects the 1782 rebuilding and later 1890 blessing, along with subsequent repairs and modern improvements. Its form is the result of repeated restoration rather than a single construction phase.
The church is also notable for its large Eucharistic cross and its educational surroundings. It stands as one of the best-known parish landmarks in Shiroda.
Recent renovation and reopening in 2025 marked a fresh chapter in the church’s long life.
