St John the Evangelist Church in Neura is one of Goa’s oldest and most historically important parish churches. Also known as Sao Joao Evangelista Church or the Neura Church, it played a major role in the early Christianization of the village and remains a significant landmark in Tiswadi.

History
The church was first built in 1541. At first it was under the Jesuits, and by 1622 it came under the Augustinians, who also opened a seminary dedicated to St John the Evangelist.
The church was rebuilt in 1624, and the Augustinians continued to administer it until 1776, when the parish was handed over to diocesan clergy. This long sequence of religious care shows how central the church was to mission life in Goa.
Neura was one of the earliest places in Goa to experience mass baptisms, and the church became a focal point for conversion and Christian settlement in the village.

The church is a large Mannerist Neo-Roman structure with five bays, three storeys, and twin bell towers. Its design is impressive and reflects the importance of the site in early missionary Goa.
The present building retains a strong historic look even after later repairs, including the shortening of the frontispiece after a collapse in the 1990s. The interior is spacious and dignified, with the main altar dedicated to St John the Evangelist.
Its architecture makes it one of the more striking churches in the island villages.
