History
The church already existed in 1541, probably as a primitive chapel with rammed-earth walls and a thatched roof. It was raised to the status of a parish church in the same year under the bishopric of Goa.
Carambolim was one of the first places in Goa to undergo mass conversion in the 16th century. The village and its church were closely linked to the early Christian settlement around Old Goa.
The present building dates from the early 17th century, and later work added a side chapel, sanctuary, and a bell tower in 1858. The church has therefore evolved over several centuries while keeping its original parish identity.

The parish has around 2,500 Catholics and remains active in worship and village tradition. It is especially famous for the São João festivities that once drew the Viceroy, state officials, and military leaders to the church courtyard.

The main doorway is framed by Corinthian columns, and the altar contains panels showing scenes from the life of St John the Baptist, including his beheading. The pulpit also has unusual mermaid carvings.
