History

The parish was founded by the Franciscans in 1594 and dedicated to St Jerome. The church was rebuilt in 1674 after earlier damage, and the present structure owes much to later work in the eighteenth century.

The church was badly damaged by fire in 1838, and many of the interior fittings, including the high altar, side altars and pulpit, were brought from the Franciscan church of the Mother of God at Daugim. The church later received further restoration work and still carries the marks of its long history.

Parish life

The parish of Mapusa is large and active. It includes the town and several chapel communities, and it remains one of the most important Catholic centres in North Goa.

Masses are celebrated daily, and the church is busy throughout the week with prayer, parish activity and devotion to both St Jerome and Our Lady of Miracles.

Feast and devotion

The parish feast of St Jerome is celebrated on the last Sunday of September every year. This is the main feast of the parish and a major day in Mapusa’s religious calendar.

The church is also popularly known for the feast of Our Lady of Miracles, celebrated on the Monday after the second Sunday of Easter. That feast draws a very large crowd and is one of the best-known devotional events in the area.

Church building

The church has a strong historic presence and a distinctive Goan colonial character. Its façade and interior reflect the many stages of rebuilding and repair over the centuries.

The church remains a familiar landmark on Market Road in Mapusa and continues to serve as a centre of worship for the town.

Chapels under the parish

The parish also includes several chapel communities, including Khorlim, Ansabhat, Gaunsavaddo and Camarcazana, which adds to its wide pastoral reach.
