History

The first church was rebuilt around 1638. After the Maratha invasion of Bardez in 1683, part of the church was burned, and the whole building was rebuilt again in 1713.

The parish was later repaired and renovated several times. A major restoration took place in the twentieth century, and the church continues to stand as a strong reminder of Franciscan influence in Colvale.

Parish life

The parish serves Catholics from Colvale and nearby areas along the river. It remains a lively local church with regular worship, parish events and devotion to its patron saint.

The parish also has many chapels under its jurisdiction, which shows how wide its pastoral role is in the surrounding area.

Feast and devotion

The feast of St Francis of Assisi is celebrated on the Sunday on or after 17 September every year. It is the main parish feast and a time of gathering for the community.

The parish calendar includes other devotional and community celebrations, but the September feast remains the most important event of the year.

Church building

The church is known for being one of the few completely vaulted parish churches in Goa. It has a single nave and a strong stone structure that reflects the work of the old Franciscan communities and local parishioners.

The façade has narrow side towers and a plain but dignified look. The setting overlooking the Chapora River adds to its beauty and historical character.

The parish has a number of chapels under its care, including Our Lady of Refuge of Sinners, St Rock, St Sebastian, Our Lady of Carmel, Our Lady of the Mount, Our Lady of Deliverance, St Anthony, St Francis Xavier and Holy Cross chapels.
