History

The church was founded in 1604 by Franciscan missionaries with the support of the villages of Guirim and Sangolda. It was built to serve Guirim, Sangolda and the valley of Porvorim.

The church was repaired in 1703, when two belfries were added. In 2004, on the occasion of its fourth centenary, major renovation work was carried out on the church and the parochial residence.

Parish life

The parish is shared between two villages, and its life reflects that shared identity. The church has long been the spiritual centre for Guirim and Sangolda together.

The parish is served by the Capuchin Fathers and the Fatima Sisters, who are based in the parish area and help with pastoral and educational work.

Feast and devotion

The feast of St Diogo is celebrated on the second Sunday of November every year. It is the main feast of the parish and an important date in the local calendar.

The church is also known for its strong devotional life, with special meaning for both Guirikkars and Sangoddkars who share the parish.

Church building

The church is built in Mannerist Neo-Roman style and is one of the larger churches in Bardez. It has a balanced and monumental look, with three entrances and twin bell towers.

The interior has three main altars and side altars devoted to Our Lady of Rosary and the Infant Jesus, along with statues of St Anthony and St Francis of Assisi.

Shared parish life

The church has a long tradition of being jointly cared for by the people of Guirim and Sangolda. Even the bells of the church are remembered as part of that shared history.
