History
The first church in Siolim was built at Gaunsvaddo in 1568 and was dedicated to Our Lady, or Mother of God. The present St Anthony Church is the second church built in Siolim, and its foundations were laid in 1600 in the village of Marna.
The church was built with support linked to a vow made by two Portuguese sailors who survived a dangerous storm. According to parish tradition, they promised to build a church in honour of St Anthony if they reached land safely. Their vow is remembered as part of the church’s origin story.
The first church structure served the people for about 300 years, but it had to be demolished in 1900. The present church was then rebuilt on the same site, with the foundation stone laid in 1901 or 1902 and the church completed in 1906. It was blessed on 28 December 1907.
Throughout its history, the church has remained closely linked to the Franciscans, who played an important role in the early Christian life of Siolim. The parish has long been one of the most important in the Bardez region.
