History

The Panchwadi church began as a chapel built by a provision dated 13 April 1888. The chapel was originally affiliated to the parish of Siroda, which was the mother parish for the area.

On 7 December 1932, the chapel was made into a separate parish. That was an important milestone in the growth of local Catholic life and gave Panchwadi its own parish identity.

The present church building was blessed and inaugurated on 22 April 1979. This means the parish has both an older devotional origin and a comparatively modern church structure.

Parish life

The parish has around 3,500 Catholics and is active in worship, schooling, and community life. St Anthony’s High School, Amblai-Panchwadi, is associated with the parish and reflects its educational role.

The parish is also supported by local youth activity and village participation. Even though the church is not among Goa’s oldest, it is very important to the community it serves.

Its parish life is centered on family, education, and devotion to St Anthony.

Feast and devotion

The feast of St Anthony is celebrated on the first Sunday of May every year. It is the principal feast of the parish and the most important celebration in the church calendar.

St Anthony is a beloved saint in Goa, and his feast in Panchwadi brings together parishioners, students, and families in prayer and celebration. The parish maintains a strong devotional atmosphere throughout the year.

Note: The parish is often referred to simply as “The Panchwadi Church,” which shows how closely the church is tied to local village identity.

Church building

The present building, inaugurated in 1979, replaced earlier chapel structures and was designed to serve a growing parish. It stands as a practical and dignified parish church rather than a very old heritage building.

The church is a recognizable landmark in Panchwadi and a place where community gatherings, liturgy, and parish events all meet. Its modern form reflects the parish’s 20th-century development.

The setting and layout make it easy to identify as the heart of the local Catholic community.
