History
The original Church of Ponda, dedicated to St Anne and St Anthony, was founded in 1700 when Ponda was still a mission station administered by the Jesuits. The existing church was built later, as the parish expanded and changed over time.
The parish was entrusted to the care of the Franciscans Minor in 1957. The present parochial residence was built in 1967, and the church sanctuary was enlarged and remodeled in 1987.
The church therefore reflects a long development from Jesuit mission outpost to a fully established parish in the heart of Ponda.
Parish life
The parish has around 8,200 Catholics and is one of the largest and most active in the area. It is served by the Franciscans, and parish life includes regular liturgy, devotions, novenas, retreats, and community activity.
St Anne’s Church is also closely associated with the town’s Catholic identity and serves as a major point of gathering for families. Its archives preserve old baptism records and Portuguese documents, which add to its historical value.
The parish is lively throughout the year, not just on feast days.
Feast and devotion
The feast of St Anne is celebrated on the Sunday on or after 26 July every year. It is the principal feast of the parish and one of the major annual events in Ponda.
Devotion to St Anne is linked with grace, family blessing, and faithfulness, and this is reflected in parish prayer and novena traditions. The church is especially important during the retreat and feast season.
Note: The parish is one of only a few churches in Goa dedicated to St Anne, which makes it especially distinctive in the Goan church landscape.
Church building
The church is a Neo-Roman style building, two storeys high, with a Rococo curved apex, cherubs in relief, a gable with a stained-glass oculus, and a left-side belfry. Its porch and façade give it a formal and recognizable appearance.
The sanctuary was later enlarged and remodeled, but the building still retains a dignified traditional character. Its architecture makes it one of the more striking churches in Ponda.
The church stands in Silva Nagar and is a visible landmark in the town.
