St Agnes Church in Sant Inez, Panaji, is a historic parish church on a hill overlooking the city. Better known locally as Santa Inez Church or St Inez Church, it is one of Goa’s older parish churches and a key part of Panaji’s Catholic heritage.

History
The church began as a small chapel built in 1584 by Dom Francisco d’Eça and Dona Joana de Menezes. It was donated to the Augustinians in 1601, rebuilt in 1605, and raised to parish status by a provision dated 27 November 1606.
The present church building dates from 1653. The Augustinians served the parish until 1769, after which diocesan clergy took charge. The parish residence later passed through several phases of use, including as the house of Canon Francisco da Cunha Souto Maior and, later, the Archbishop’s residence.
The church is therefore one of the oldest surviving parish centres in Panaji and has a long history tied to the growth of the city itself.
Parish life
The parish has around 5,000 Catholics and remains active in worship and community life. It also has the only cemetery in Panaji, which is attached to the church complex and gives the parish an additional civic and pastoral role.
The church has long served a mixed urban community, with faithful parishioners, neighborhood families, and visitors all using the site. Its setting gives it a peaceful atmosphere despite its location within the city.
Because it overlooks Panaji, it is both a parish church and a visual landmark.
Feast and devotion
The feast of St Agnes is celebrated on the Sunday after 21 January every year. It is the principal feast of the parish and a key liturgical moment in the local calendar.
The church also celebrates Our Lady of Safe Harbour in May, which adds another Marian layer to parish devotion. Together these celebrations reflect the parish’s long devotional memory and urban Goan identity.

The church is built in a Mannerist Neo-Roman style, with twin towers, low domes, and a formal façade. Its architecture is elegant but restrained, giving it a dignified presence on the hill.
The church complex includes the parochial house, a community hall, and the cemetery. Recent interior work has added aesthetic touches while preserving the historical character of the structure.
Its elevated position makes it one of the most recognizable churches in Panaji.
