History
The church was founded in 1565 by Franciscan priests with the support of the village comunidade. It served first as the parish church of Serula, which was then the largest village in Bardez.
Later, the old parish of Serula was divided into three parishes, and Salvador do Mundo became one of them. The church also had a house of studies where people were taught Konkani, and it was unusual at the time because the parish priest had an upper floor residence.
Feast and parish life
The parish feast of Saviour of the World is celebrated on 6 August every year. In the village, this is the main feast and is often called the Konsanchem Fest because of the blessing of the cornfields.
Before the feast Mass, the priest goes with the faithful to the fields, blesses the crop and cuts the first sheaves. This old custom is still a special part of the parish celebration.
Church building
The church has a Mannerist Neo-Roman façade and is remembered as one of the largest churches in Bardez in earlier times. It stands along the roadside between Penha de Franca and Pomburpa, so it is easy to notice even from a distance.
The parish also has several chapels under its care, including St Rita at Donvaddo, St Anne at Salem, Mãe de Deus at Paetona and St Sebastian at Badem and Torda.
Church life today
The church continues to serve as the spiritual centre of Salvador do Mundo. Masses, novenas and parish events keep the church active throughout the year, not just on feast days.
The parish has a strong farming tradition, and the blessing of fields remains one of the most distinctive features of its identity.
