History

The Sadolxem chapel was blessed on 4 June 1920 and was originally part of the parish of Galgibaga. It was later raised to the status of a separate parish on 24 April 1954.

For many years the parish continued to develop around the original chapel site. In recent times, a new church building was constructed at the original location and formally dedicated and inaugurated on 15 May 2024 by Archbishop Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão.

The 2024 inauguration marked a major step in the life of the parish, giving it a new building while preserving continuity with the earlier chapel tradition.

Parish life

The parish has around 950 Catholics and is served by the Capuchin Order, which gives it a strong pastoral and missionary character. The church also has a history of parish community work and active local participation.

Parish life includes worship, devotional services, youth activity, and community celebrations. Because the parish is small, it has a personal and close-knit atmosphere.

The church is an important focus of identity for Catholics in Sadolxem and nearby areas.

Feast and devotion

The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year. It is the principal feast of the parish and the main annual celebration in the church calendar.

The parish has a strong Marian devotion, and the feast is the central moment for prayer and community gathering. It remains a defining part of parish life.

Note: The parish is locally known as the Sadolxem Church, which reflects how closely it is tied to the village itself.

Church building

The newly dedicated church building at the original site was completed after a long process of reconstruction and preparation. It serves as the present parish church while preserving the memory of the 1920 chapel.

The church is modest in scale but significant in meaning. It gives the parish a stable and visible home for worship and local gatherings.

The building’s recent dedication in 2024 means the parish now has a fresh physical centre while keeping its older history intact.
