History

The first chapel in Caranzalem was built in 1731 by Konego Francisco da Cunha Souto Maior and was dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. In his will of 1736, he donated the chapel and his property to the bishop, after which the archdiocese began administering it.

For a long time the chapel functioned as part of St Michael Church, Taleigao. As the Catholic population grew, Caranzalem was made into an independent parish in 2013.

The old chapel has since been renovated and converted into the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, while a new parish church complex was completed and blessed in 2010. This gives the parish a rare combination of preserved heritage and modern church life.

Parish life

The parish has around 1,500 Catholics and is active in worship and community activity. The church is served by a religious order based in the parish, which helps maintain pastoral care and liturgical life.

Although it is a relatively young independent parish, it carries a much older chapel history. Parish life is shaped by family devotion, feast celebrations, and the memory of the original chapel.

Because the parish is small, it has a close and personal character.

Feast and devotion

The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated on the second Sunday of October every year. It is the principal feast of the parish and the main liturgical celebration in Caranzalem.

Devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary remains the heart of parish identity. The feast brings together parishioners for prayer, thanksgiving, and local celebration.

Note: The old chapel has been preserved as a Blessed Sacrament chapel, so the parish still keeps a direct link to its original sacred site.

Church building

The church complex completed in 2010 serves as the current parish church. It provides the parish with a modern worship space, while the old chapel remains a meaningful part of the site.

The church’s location in Caranzalem, near Panaji, makes it easily accessible and visible to residents and visitors alike. Its recent development contrasts with the much older chapel origin.

That contrast is one of the parish’s defining features.

Present significance

Today, Our Lady of the Rosary Church at Caranzalem remains a small but important parish church with a rich chapel history and a modern identity. Its 1731 origin, 2010 church complex, and 2013 parish status make it one of the newer independent parishes in Goa.

For the people of Caranzalem, it is both a parish home and a link between old devotion and present growth.
