History

The church was founded by the Jesuits in 1630. On 24 April 1635, it was raised to the rank of a parish church by order of the administrator of the Archdiocese, the Bishop of Cochin.

The church was rebuilt in 1807, and that rebuilding gave it much of the form and stability it has retained since then. Its history reflects both Jesuit beginnings and later parish consolidation.

For centuries, it has stood as the spiritual centre of Betalbatim and one of the important churches in the Salcete region.

The parish has around 7,100 Catholics and remains one of the larger parishes in South Goa. It is served by the Jesuit Fathers and the Franciscan Missionaries of Christ the King, whose presence supports parish work and religious formation.
