Our Lady of Piety Church in Piedade, Divar Island, is one of Goa’s most historic and scenic island churches. Perched on a hill above the village, it combines deep devotional tradition, layered history, and a striking setting above the Mandovi.

History
The first chapel on this site was already present in 1541. It was rebuilt in 1625 and later raised to church status, while the present vaulted structure was begun in 1700 and completed in 1724.
Tradition connects the chapel site with an older sacred history on the hill, and some accounts say the first chapel may have stood on the site of a former Hindu temple. The church also owes part of its construction to the support of the Goltim and Navelim comunidades.
The current church was designed by a Goan priest, Fr Antonio Joao de Frias, and it became the centre of Catholic life for the Piedade village on Divar.

The parish has around 1,500 Catholics and remains active in worship and devotion. It is a small island parish, but its history and position make it unusually important in Goa’s church landscape.
The parish is known for its strong devotional practices, annual novena, and the Maddi tradition before the feast. The community is closely linked to the sacred hilltop site and the cemetery area nearby.

Feast and devotion
The feast of Our Lady of Piety is celebrated on the third Sunday of October every year. It is the principal feast of the parish and the main annual celebration for the village.

Note: The church is also remembered for a story about a ship’s bell, which adds a maritime legend to its devotional history.

The church has a New Roman form with Baroque features and three main entrances. Its elevated position and broad façade make it one of the most picturesque churches on Divar Island.
The main altar is dedicated to Our Lady of Piety, whose image stands prominently behind it. The setting includes a small walled cemetery and a chapel-like enclosure, adding to the site’s historic atmosphere.
