History
The church was first built in 1626. The original construction was funded by Dona Anna de Azavedo, a Franciscan tertiary, who later left the church and nearby property to the Franciscans.
The first building did not last long. Because the church stood close to the river and was exposed to water during high tide, it collapsed within about 26 years. A new and larger church was then built in 1655 and has remained the parish church since then.
Setting and identity
The church stands on the bank of the Mandovi River, and its site is one of the reasons it is so widely known. From a distance, the building and its riverfront wall make it a distinctive landmark in Britona.
The church takes its name from the Marian devotion of Penha de Franca, a title that was also known in Portugal and became important among Portuguese seafarers.
Feast and parish life
The parish feast is celebrated on 8 September each year. It remains the main annual religious celebration of the parish and draws together parishioners, neighbours and visitors.

The grave of Dona Anna de Azavedo is kept inside the church, and her name remains closely linked with the church’s foundation. In later years the building received repairs and renovation, including work on the roof and sacristy.
