Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Arambol is the parish church of the village and the first parish church in Pernem taluka. It has a long history, a strong village identity and a feast that remains very important for the local Catholic community.

History
The church was first built in 1780 by Fr Patricio Fernandes. At that time it was dedicated to St John the Baptist and served as the first church in Pernem taluka.
The church remained under the ecclesial jurisdiction of Sawantwadi for some years. In 1827 it was separated from that jurisdiction and received its first parish priest, Fr Manuel Homem.
In 1841 the church was rebuilt and rededicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Later improvements followed: the façade was rebuilt in 1878, the Stations of the Cross were added in 1890, the church was extended in 1907 and blessed in January 1908, and further parish extensions were made in 2001.
Parish life
The parish is known as the mother church of Pernem taluka. It has been a central place of worship for Arambol and the surrounding areas for generations.
The parish also cares for nearby chapels and includes a strong lay and family presence, especially in a village that has grown into a popular coastal destination.
Feast and devotion
The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is celebrated on the third Sunday of January every year. It is the main feast of the parish and one of the most important events in the village calendar.
The following day, parishioners also celebrate the Boil-karanchem Fest, which keeps older local customs alive.
Church building
The church stands on a small hillock near the coast. Its present structure is a mix of older and newer parts, with a Neo-Roman façade and Indian influences in the design.
At the top of the façade is the bell and beneath it is the image of the patron, Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The building is simple but distinctive and remains one of the most recognisable churches in north Goa.
Church life today
The parish continues to serve the faithful with regular Masses, parish celebrations and community events. It is also closely linked with Mount Carmel High School and the Canossian Daughters of Charity, who are based in the parish.
The church remains both a religious centre and a place of local memory for the people of Arambol.
