History
The first church connected with Sanguem existed in 1763 and was located in Zambaulim. The Sanguem chapel, which was originally affiliated to the parish church of Zambaulim, was blessed in 1853. In 1858 it was raised to the status of a parish church and a church building was constructed.
The early structure was small and was known for many years as the Military Chapel. The parish later developed under the care of missionary priests, and in 1951 the Sanguem taluka was declared a mission and entrusted to the Pilar Fathers.
The older church was eventually demolished, and a new church building was constructed in 1977. That new building gave the parish a more spacious and durable home while preserving the older devotion to Our Lady of Miracles.
Parish life
The parish has about 6,200 Catholics and is one of the major parish communities in the region. It includes a number of chapels and supports a wide network of parish life in and around Sanguem.
The religious orders present in the parish include the Missionaries of St Francis Xavier, the Capuchins, the Pilar Sisters, and the Holy Family Sisters. Their presence gives the parish a strong pastoral and educational foundation.
