History

The church began as a chapel built in 1892. It was elevated to the status of an affiliate of the parish of Majorda on 30 October 1894, and later became an independent parish in 1976.

As the Catholic population increased, the church needed more space, so it was enlarged in 1991. That expansion helped the parish continue to serve a growing community while preserving the identity of the original chapel site.

The church’s development from chapel to parish reflects the gradual strengthening of Catholic life in Utorda. It is one of the relatively newer parish churches in Goa, but it has quickly become an important centre of worship and devotion.

Parish life

The parish is large, with around 4,500 Catholics, and it has a vibrant and involved community. Parish life includes daily worship, sacraments, novenas, youth activities, retreat prayer, and local parish events.

The parish is supported by the Sisters of Maria Sangh, also known as Shanti Bhaginis, who are based at Our Lady of Peace Convent in Utorda. Their presence gives the parish an educational and pastoral dimension.

Because the parish is active and well established, the church is not only a local place of worship but also a hub for community life in Utorda.

Feast and devotion

The feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is celebrated on 14 November every year. In addition, novenas are held in preparation for the feast, and the community also honours the global celebration of Our Lady of Lourdes on 11 February.

The feast is the parish’s major annual celebration and draws together the faithful in prayer and thanksgiving. It is a key part of the church’s Marian devotion and village identity.

Note: The church also has a grotto outside the building depicting the apparition of Our Lady to St Bernadette, which strengthens the Lourdes connection in a visible way.

Church building

The church is known for its eclectically styled architecture with Mannerist touches. Its white exterior, neat form, and prayerful interior create a peaceful atmosphere that fits its Marian dedication.

Inside and around the church there are devotional features such as the grotto, a prayer room, and a pre-Portuguese marble plaque listing donors. These details give the site a sense of history and devotion beyond its current parish function.

The church remains a recognizable landmark in Utorda and a calm place for both worshippers and visitors.
