History
The church existed before 1897 and was affiliated to Tilamola and Sanvordem. Its long history shows that Dabal was already part of a wider parish network before becoming independent.
The present parish was built in 1958. The pastoral care of the parish was entrusted to the Society of Pilar Fathers for 31 years, until May 1997. A new church building was blessed on 25 May 1997, marking another stage in the parish’s development.
The parish therefore reflects a gradual shift from dependence on neighbouring parishes to a distinct local church identity of its own.
Parish life
The parish has around 350 Catholics and remains a small but active Catholic community. Its size gives it a close village character, with parish life centered on worship, sacraments, and local devotion.
The parish is served by the Franciscan Missionaries of Christ the King, who are based at the Immaculate Conception Convent in Dabal. Their presence gives the parish a religious and educational dimension.
Because the community is small, the parish life is personal and family-oriented, with strong local participation.
Feast and devotion
The feast of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception is celebrated on the Saturday on or after 8 December every year. It is the principal feast of the parish and the most important celebration in the local calendar.
The devotion to the Immaculate Conception gives the parish a clear Marian identity and links the Dabal community to the wider Catholic celebration of Mary’s sinless conception.
Note: The parish feast is the main yearly moment of gathering for a small community that values its church as both a spiritual and social centre.
Church building
The present church building was blessed in 1997 and provides a more complete parish home than the earlier chapel structures. It is a practical and modest parish church suited to the size of the community it serves.
The church grounds and convent help shape the parish’s daily life. The new building marks continuity with the older tradition while also giving the parish a clearer present-day identity.
Its setting in the Curchorem–Dharbandora region makes it a recognizable local landmark for the Dabal area.
