History
According to tradition, Portuguese sailors built the church in gratitude after being saved from a shipwreck by the intercession of Our Lady. The structure is said to have been built in 1565, though other historical accounts give different dates for its origin and later reconstruction.
There had already been an earlier chapel at Ribandar between 1551 and 1554, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and linked to the church of Livra Febres in Chimbel. The church also has the distinction of having welcomed the ship carrying the incorrupt body of St Francis Xavier in 1554.
Different scholars give varying dates for the present building or its reconstruction, including 1565, 1601, 1656, and an earlier pre-1539 phase. What is clear is that the church belongs to the very early Portuguese Christian history of Goa.
