Our Lady of Health Church in Sancoale is one of Goa’s most historically important church sites. History
The first church at Sancoale was established in the 16th century after Jesuit missionaries arrived in the area around 1560. The church is generally described as having been built in 1606, though some sources also refer to an earlier Jesuit chapel tradition and the completion of construction in 1566. What is clear is that this was one of the earliest Christian institutions in the area.
The church was dedicated to Our Lady of Health, and the Jesuits established it to mark their presence in Sancoale. In 1677, Blessed Joseph Vaz wrote his famous “Letter of Bondage†at this church, an event that gives the site special importance in Goan Catholic history.
The church was badly damaged by fire in 1834. After that, only the façade and a few structural remains survived. The surviving frontispiece became a protected monument, while a newer chapel was later built behind it in 1783 and the parish life continued in a different form.
Parish life
The church site is associated with a parish of about 3,250 Catholics. Even though the original structure no longer survives as a complete church, the location remains a living religious centre and an important devotional place.
The parish includes the sanctuary of Blessed Joseph Vaz, built in 1911 to mark the second death centenary of the saint. The sanctuary was later renovated in 2003 and continues to be an important part of the site’s religious life.
The church and sanctuary together make Sancoale one of the most meaningful pilgrimage and devotion sites in Goa.
Feast and devotion
The feast of Our Lady of Health is celebrated on the second Sunday of May every year. It is the principal feast associated with the parish and remains a major event in the local devotional calendar.
The site is also closely connected with devotion to Blessed Joseph Vaz, who is one of Goa’s best-loved saints. His association with the church adds another layer of historical and spiritual meaning.
Note: The feast and the Joseph Vaz connection make Sancoale one of the strongest sites of Catholic memory in Goa, even though the original church building is now in ruins.
Church building
What stands today is mainly the façade of the old church. It is an early Christian-Goan structure with composite Corinthian pilasters, decorative reliefs, and a striking front elevation that can be seen from the Agassaim–Cortalim bridge.
The original church stood by the Zuari River and was once a grand building. After the 1834 fire, the façade remained as a monumental ruin, giving the place a unique historic atmosphere.
The setting by the river and the surviving façade make it one of the most memorable heritage sites in South Goa.
