History

The parish church of Batim is dedicated to Guadalup Saibinn, or Our Lady of Guadalupe. Historical accounts place its construction between 1596 and 1610, during the period of Augustinian Archbishop Frei Aleixo de Menezes.

The church sits in a village that gained wider attention in 1994 after reported Marian apparitions at Mount Ganxim, nearby. The parish also includes the older hilltop chapel of Saints Simon and Jude, which is part of the same religious landscape.

Batim’s church history is therefore a mix of older Portuguese parish foundations and newer devotional attention around the apparition site.

Parish life

The parish has around 2,500 Catholics and is active in worship, novenas, and local Catholic life. It is one of the more visible parishes in Goa Velha because of the strong public interest in the Batim apparition tradition.

The parish also has a strong devotional culture centered on Marian prayer, village gatherings, and pilgrim visits. The Church of Saints Simon and Jude at Ganxim is closely linked to this broader parish identity.

As a result, Batim is known both as a parish village and as a pilgrimage-linked place.

Feast and devotion

The feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on 19 December every year. It is the principal feast of the parish and the main liturgical celebration for the village.

Devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is especially strong in Batim, and the feast is a time of thanksgiving, prayer, and community gathering. The apparition tradition has added a modern layer of devotion to the older parish identity.

Note: The hill at Ganxim became especially well known after the 1994 apparition reports connected with Iveta Gomes and continued first-Saturday devotion.

Church building

The parish church stands in Goa Velha and serves the village as its main Catholic centre. The hilltop church at Ganxim, dedicated to Saints Simon and Jude, forms part of the parish’s wider sacred geography.

The parish church is substantial and well known locally, while the Ganxim hill chapel adds an important devotional and historical dimension. Together they create a distinctive parish landscape.

The site is one of the most recognized in the area because of the blend of history, devotion, and apparition narratives.
