Our Lady of Bethlehem Church in Chandor is one of the best-known parish churches in South Goa and a major landmark in the historic village of Chandor. It combines a long 17th-century history, strong Marian devotion, and the famous Three Kings celebration.

History
The church was built in 1645 by the communidades of Chandor, Cavorim, and Guirdolim. It was originally known as Our Lady of Remedies, but after the frontispiece collapsed in 1949 and the church was reconstructed, it took on its present title of Our Lady of Bethlehem.
The reconstructed church was blessed on 17 December 1950. Although the frontispiece was rebuilt in Neo-Gothic style, the nave and sanctuary retained their earlier Mannerist character, preserving the old architectural core of the church.
The church stands in Chandor, the ancient capital associated with the Bhojas and Kadambas, which gives it a place in both religious and regional history. The Christian presence in Chandor existed long before the present church building was raised.
Parish life
The parish has around 12,500 Catholics, making it one of the largest Catholic communities in Goa. It is served by the Religious Women Order of the Pallottine Sisters, whose presence supports education, pastoral work, and parish life.
The parish includes several village communities and is known for strong participation in liturgy, catechesis, processions, and family devotions. The church is a central institution in the life of Chandor.

Feast and devotion
The feast of Our Lady of Bethlehem is celebrated on 6 January every year, together with the Feast of the Three Kings or Epiphany. It is one of Goa’s most distinctive parish feasts.
On the feast day, three boys from the parish play the role of the Three Magi and ride in procession from the Chapel of Our Lady of Piety to the church. This tradition is one of the most memorable parish customs in Goa and gives Chandor a unique devotional identity.
Note: The Three Kings celebration is one of the reasons this parish is so widely known and so deeply loved in Goa.
Church building
The church has a simple exterior with two towers that give it a fort-like appearance, while the interior is more ornate. The contrast between exterior simplicity and interior detail is one of the church’s most appealing architectural qualities.
The surviving Mannerist sanctuary and nave link the church to its older past, while the Neo-Gothic façade reflects the reconstruction after the 1949 collapse. The piazza cross on the church premises also adds to the site’s identity.
Located in the centre of Chandor, the church stands near Braganza House and remains one of the village’s most prominent landmarks.
