Origins as a chapel
The story of Nuvem Church begins in 1695, when Jose Colaco, a ganvkar of Margao, built a small chapel on his property in Nuvem next to his house. He dedicated this chapel to the Holy Familyâ€â€ÂJesus, Mary and Josephâ€â€Âand to Mother of the Poor.
Initially, the chapel was affiliated to the Holy Spirit parish in Margao and was administered by Jesuit priests based there. Over time, the chapel attracted many poor peasant families from the surrounding area, who found comfort and support in the devotion to Mother of the Poor.
Because of this growing devotion among poorer villagers, the chapel came to be known simply as the Mother of the Poor Church.
Elevation to parish and architectural style
Nuvem became a separate parish in 1903. The existing church building was constructed in Neo‑Roman‑Mannerist style, with features typical of early twentieth‑century Goan ecclesiastical architecture.
Externally, the church presents a balanced façade, and internally it houses three altars. The main altar displays images of the Holy Family, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary, and a central crucifix, expressing the core themes of family, love and sacrifice.
New church building and design
As the number of Catholics in Nuvem grew, the older church became too small for the parish. A new, larger church was therefore constructed next to the old one, funded by parishioners and well‑wishers.
This new church was inaugurated on 30 December 2023 by Archbishop (now Cardinal) Filipe Neri Ferrao. Its design has been likened to Noah’s Ark: it features a curved roof, a striking stained‑glass artwork of the Holy Family on the front glass cladding and a mural of Jesus calming stormy waters.
The new building can seat around 1,500 people, with a choir loft accommodating about 300, making it one of the more spacious parish churches in the area.
Feast and parish life
The main parish feast of Mother of the Poor Church at Nuvem is celebrated on the first Sunday of November. Each year, this feast draws large crowds from Nuvem and neighbouring villages, with multiple Masses, processions and community events.
Regular parish life includes daily Masses, catechism for children, youth activities and devotions centred on the Holy Family and Mother of the Poor. The combination of older chapel, newer ark‑like church and strong devotion among poorer families gives Nuvem a distinctive character within Salcete’s network of parishes.
