The church was founded in 1588, when the foundation stone was laid and an image of Our Lady was placed in a wooden box under the opening. It was established by the Jesuits and later made a parish church during the tenure of Archbishop Aleixo de Menezes.
The church was set on fire by the Marathas in April 1738 during an invasion, but it was repaired and rebuilt in 1739. That rebuilding preserved the parish’s continuity while giving the church the form that remained important in later centuries.
