Holy Spirit Church in Naroa, Divar, is a historic fortress church with a unique origin tied to the old Naroa fort. Though small today, it remains one of Goa’s most interesting heritage churches because of its fort connection, long history, and Pentecost feast.

History
The church’s origin goes back to a royal order in 1546, when the King of Portugal instructed that a church be built at Naroa. Tradition says the church was intended for St Thomas the Apostle, though the present church is dedicated to the Holy Spirit.
The present building was constructed in 1710 by Diogo da Silveira, the captain of Naroa fort. It stands as the last major surviving element connected to the fort and its historic settlement.
The church was once under Jesuit administration, and over the centuries it remained an important devotional site even as the fort itself fell into ruin.
Parish life
The parish has around 95 Catholics, making it one of the smallest Catholic communities in Goa. There is no resident priest, and the spiritual needs of the church are cared for by St Mathias Parish, Malar, on Divar.
Despite its size, the church remains active on Sundays and on special feast days. Its small flock gives it a quiet and intimate parish atmosphere.
The church is also closely connected to the local memory of the fort, the island, and the old Catholic population of Naroa.
Feast and devotion
The feast of the Holy Spirit is celebrated on Pentecost Sunday, fifty days after Easter. It is the principal feast of the church and the main annual celebration for the community.
Because the feast falls on Pentecost, the church’s devotion has a strong link with the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church. The main altar is dedicated to the Holy Spirit, while the central image also includes St Thomas.

Church building
The church is a simple two-storeyed structure with a single bell tower on the left and a tiled porch. Its architecture is modest but historically rich, with walls and features that reflect the medieval-period style common in old Goan churches.
The bell in the tower originally belonged to the Holy Trinity Church of Old Goa, which no longer exists. The sanctuary also contains the mortal remains of Diogo da Silveira.
The building’s proximity to the remains of Naroa fort gives it a special historical atmosphere.
