History
The church began as a Holy Family chapel in 1952, built as an affiliate of the Socorro parish. It served the Catholic families of Alto Porvorim and Alto Betim for many years before becoming a parish church.
In 1979 the growing number of families led the community to request elevation of the chapel to a church and to ask for a plan for a new church building and chaplain’s residence. The chapel was finally elevated to a church in January 2006.
The parish itself grew out of nine zones that were taken from older parishes such as Socorro, Salvador do Mundo, Penha de Franca, Reis Magos and Pilerne.
Parish life
The parish is lively and busy, with a large number of families and active lay groups. It is closely linked to modern growth in the Porvorim area while still keeping a strong Catholic identity.
The parish also includes Holy Cross Chapel in Alto-Betim, which forms part of its wider pastoral work.
Feast and devotion
The feast of the Holy Family is celebrated on the last Sunday of January. Earlier it was celebrated on the first Sunday after Christmas, and the feast continues to be one of the parish’s main celebrations.
Parish life also includes novenas and Eucharistic adoration, with special Masses on important days and a strong Sunday schedule.
Church building
The present church is a modern parish church built to serve a fast-growing suburban community. It stands prominently at Alto Porvorim and has become a familiar landmark along the main road.
Its parish hall, chaplain’s residence and other facilities show how the parish was planned to meet the needs of a growing population.
Institutions
The parish is home to several institutions, including the Xavier Centre of Historical Research, the Thomas Stephens Konkani Kendr, the clergy home and J.M.J. Hospital. These institutions make the parish area important beyond church worship alone.
