History
The Sanvordem church began as a chapel that was canonically linked to the parish of Tilamola by decree on 9 April 1887. In 1915 it was raised to the status of a quasi-parish church with jurisdiction over the village of Sanvordem, which at that time belonged to the parish of Siroda.
The chapel was rebuilt in 1933 and then elevated to a full parish on 10 January 1936. From 1953 to 1997, the parish was under the pastoral care of the Society of Pilar. The church was rebuilt again in 1999, giving it its present form.
This long sequence of chapel, quasi-parish, parish, and rebuilding shows the gradual growth of the Catholic community in Sanvordem and the church’s increasing importance over time.
Parish life
The parish has around 1,350 Catholics and remains a strong local community. Parish life includes Sunday Mass, novenas, catechesis, youth activities, and family celebrations that keep the church active throughout the year.
The parish also functions as a social centre for the wider Sanvordem–Curchorem area. It serves both the devotional and practical needs of the community and has a strong identity of its own.
Because of its unique dedication, the church stands out among Goan parishes and has a special place in local memory.
Feast and devotion
The feast of the Guardian Angel is celebrated on the third Sunday of November every year. It is the principal feast of the parish and the most important event in the church calendar.
Devotion to the Guardian Angel gives the parish a gentle and protective spiritual tone. The feast is a time of prayer, thanksgiving, and village celebration.
Note: The church is widely known as the Sanvordem Church, and in the parish tradition it is considered the only church in Goa dedicated to the Guardian Angel.
Church building
The present church is a three-storeyed building with two bell towers and a mixed Neo-Roman style. It has pointed arches, a large concrete porch supported by round columns, and a distinctive façade that makes it easy to recognize.
The building was rebuilt in 1999 and combines practicality with a clear sense of parish identity. Its architecture is more recent than many older Goan churches, but it has a strong and memorable presence.
The church grounds and parish facilities help support the active life of the parish community.
