Early Life and Formation

António Francisco (Anthony Francis) was born in 1553 in the mountainous municipality of Pampilhosa da Serra within the Coimbra district of Portugal. Raised in a devout Catholic family, he exhibited a strong inclination toward religious life from an early age. In 1571, at the age of eighteen, he entered the Society of Jesus in Coimbra, a city renowned for its rich academic and ecclesiastical heritage.

As a young Jesuit, he proved to be a dedicated student, immersing himself in philosophy and theology. His heart, however, was set on the foreign missions. The tales of St. Francis Xavier and the expanding missionary frontiers in Asia captured his imagination, leading him to volunteer for the arduous journey to the Portuguese East Indies.

The Journey to Goa and Ordination

In 1581, Brother Anthony Francis embarked on the perilous sea voyage to India, arriving in Goa, which was the thriving epicenter of the Portuguese colonial and missionary enterprise in Asia. Upon his arrival, he continued his theological studies at the esteemed St. Paul's College in Old Goa. It was here that he absorbed the diverse cultural and spiritual atmosphere of the region, preparing himself for active ministry.

His dedication culminated in his ordination to the priesthood in Goa in 1583. Shortly after being ordained, his superiors recognized his fiery zeal and assigned him to the Salcete mission, a challenging territory south of Goa where missionary efforts had frequently met with staunch resistance.

The Confrontation and Martyrdom at Cuncolim

Blessed Anthony Francis was one of the five Jesuits killed at Cuncolim in Goa in 1583. On July 25 of that year, Fr. Anthony Francis accompanied Fr. Rudolph Acquaviva, Fr. Alphonsus Pacheco, Fr. Peter Berno, and Brother Francis Aranha on a fateful expedition to the village of Cuncolim. Their objective was to scout a location for a new church and plant a cross, an act that symbolized the establishment of the Christian faith in the area.

His story is tied to the early clash between missionary zeal and local resistance in Salsette. The villagers of Cuncolim were deeply aggrieved by the recent destruction of their traditional temples by Portuguese authorities. When the missionaries arrived, the simmering anger boiled over. He shared the same mission environment as the other martyrs and met death in the same violent encounter that ended their attempt to enter the village.

As the armed mob descended upon the missionaries, Fr. Anthony Francis faced his attackers with quiet courage. Historical accounts of the martyrdom detail that he was first pierced by several arrows. As he fell, an attacker struck him a fatal blow, splitting his head open with a sword. He died instantly, offering his life for the faith he had traveled so far to proclaim.

Miracles, Legacy, and Veneration

He is remembered today with the other martyrs as part of Goa's deep and often painful Catholic heritage. Following the massacre, the bodies of Fr. Anthony Francis and his companions were thrown into a local well to hide the evidence of the slaughter. However, this act only served to magnify their witness.

• The Incorruptible Discovery: When the bodies were retrieved days later, they were reportedly found without any signs of decomposition, a phenomenon that deeply moved the local Christian community and was considered a definitive sign of their sanctity.
• The Martyrs' Well: The well into which their bodies were cast quickly became a site of profound veneration. For centuries, pilgrims have traveled to Cuncolim to draw water from this well, with many attributing miraculous healings and spiritual graces to the intercession of the martyrs.

The remains of Blessed Anthony Francis were initially interred at the Church of Our Lady of the Snows in Rachol. Following the beatification of the Cuncolim Martyrs in 1893 by Pope Leo XIII, their relics were solemnly translated to the Cathedral of Old Goa, where they rest today in a specially dedicated chapel, honored by the faithful of Goa and beyond.
