The King's Ring
Theme: Eternal Perspective in Joy and Sorrow
A mighty king called upon the wisest jeweler in his kingdom. "I want you to forge a special ring for me," the king commanded. "But it must have a secret inscription hidden inside. The words must be true in every situation. They must comfort me when I am overwhelmed with sorrow, and they must ground me when I am overwhelmed by success."
The jeweler worked for weeks. Finally, he presented the king with a simple, beautiful gold band.
The king looked inside the ring and read the inscription: "This too shall pass."
The jeweler explained, "When you are defeated, heartbroken, and feeling like the world is crushing you, look at the ring. It will remind you that your suffering is temporary. And when you win great victories, conquer enemies, and feel like you are a god among men, look at the ring. It will humble you, reminding you that your earthly glory will quickly fade into dust."
Reflection
Earthly life is fleeting. The crushing sorrows of today and the spectacular triumphs of tomorrow are both incredibly temporary. As Christians, we are called to keep our eyes fixed on eternity. When you suffer, remember that the pain will pass and give way to Heavenly glory. When you succeed, stay humble, knowing that only God's kingdom lasts forever.
