The Blind Man's Lantern
Theme: Selflessness, Consideration, and Loving Our Neighbor
In a small, poorly lit village, a blind man was walking home late at night. In one hand, he carried a walking stick to guide his steps, and in the other, he carried a brightly lit lantern.
A young traveler walking in the opposite direction noticed the blind man. Confused and amused, the traveler stopped him and laughed.
"Old man," the traveler said, "you are completely blind! You cannot see day or night. What possible use is a lit lantern to you? You are wasting your oil!"
The blind man smiled gently and held the lantern up a little higher. "I do not carry this lantern for myself," he replied. "I know the streets of this village by heart, even in the absolute dark. I carry this lantern for you, and for everyone else who has eyes to see. I carry it so that others will not stumble in the dark and crash into me."
The traveler immediately stopped laughing, deeply humbled by the old man's consideration.
Reflection
Living a holy life isn't just about illuminating our own path; it is about carrying the light of Christ so that others do not stumble. True Christian charity requires us to think beyond our own immediate needs. When we carry the lantern of kindness, patience, and good example, we protect the souls of everyone who crosses our path.
