The Golden Buddha
Theme: Discovering Our Divine Image Beneath the Sin
Centuries ago, an army was preparing to invade a peaceful village. The local monks had a magnificent, towering statue of a golden Buddha that was priceless. Knowing the invaders would steal it, the monks hastily covered the entire statue in thick, ugly mud and clay.
The invaders came, saw the worthless-looking clay statue, and left it alone. The secret of the gold was lost over time, and for hundreds of years, everyone believed the statue was just made of plain, ugly dirt.
One day, a monk was moving the statue and accidentally dropped a heavy tool against it. A large chunk of the clay cracked and fell off. As the monk leaned in closer, he saw something shining underneath. He quickly chipped away more clay, and soon the entire village was staring in awe at the brilliant, solid gold masterpiece that had been there all along.
Reflection
God creates every human soul in His own golden image. But as we go through life, fear, trauma, bad choices, and sin cover us in layers of "clay." We begin to believe we are nothing but the dirt on the outside. Through confession, repentance, and God's love, the clay is chipped away, revealing the radiant, precious child of God you have always been.
