The Rope in the Dark
Theme: Faith, Fear, and Total Surrender to God
An arrogant mountain climber, determined to conquer a massive peak alone, slipped near the summit. He fell rapidly through the pitch-black, freezing night. Just as he thought he would die, the safety rope tied to his waist caught him.
He was left dangling in the absolute darkness, swinging in the freezing wind, unable to see anything below him. Desperate, he cried out, "God, help me! Please help me!"
Suddenly, a deep, resonant voice echoed from the sky. "Do you truly trust Me?" "Yes, Lord! I trust You! Save me!" the climber screamed. "If you trust Me," the voice replied, "cut the rope."
The climber froze. Cut the rope? That meant certain death. He gripped the rope even tighter, refusing to let go, choosing to trust his own safety line over the voice.
The next morning, a rescue team found the climber frozen to death, still clinging tightly to his rope... dangling just two feet above the solid, flat ground.
Reflection
How often do we cling to our own plans, our pride, and our material security because we are terrified of the unknown? True faith requires us to "cut the rope" of our own control and surrender completely to God's will. Even when it feels like we are falling into the dark, His solid ground is closer than we think.
