The Last Piece of Bread

A family sat down to dinner with very little on the table. Just enough curry, a small bowl of rice, and one last piece of bread. The father noticed his daughter looking at the bread with hunger. At the same moment, there was a knock at the door.

Outside stood an elderly man who had clearly not eaten. For a moment, everyone in the house became quiet. They did not have enough. Or so it seemed.

The mother broke the bread in half, added some rice to a plate, and gave it to the man. After he left, the family sat together in unusual silence.

Then the daughter said, "I still feel hungry, but I also feel happy."

Her father smiled. "That," he said, "is what it feels like when love is stronger than fear."

Years later she would remember that meal more than any feast. She had learned that generosity is not measured by how much we have, but by what we are willing to trust God with.
