The Plate Left Unwashed
Mira always helped at home, but only when someone noticed. If guests were around, she was first to serve water, wipe the table and smile sweetly. But on ordinary days she left her plate on the sink and walked away, expecting her mother to finish the rest.
One Sunday after lunch, her grandmother visited. Mira did her usual little performance and quickly sat beside Grandma to be praised. But Grandma said nothing. Instead, she stood up slowly, took Mira's plate and quietly washed it herself.
That evening Mira asked, "Grandma, were you upset with me?"
Grandma replied, "No. I was just sad that you are learning to be seen doing good, instead of learning to do good."
The words stayed with Mira. The next day, no one reminded her, but she washed her plate. Then she washed her brother's cup too. No one clapped. No one noticed. But something new happened inside her. She felt joy.
Reflection
Days later, her mother said, "You've become so helpful." Mira smiled, but this time the smile did not depend on being praised. She had discovered a secret: goodness becomes real when it continues even in silence.
